Real places. Real learning. Real impact. ACE program days take students beyond the classroom — into communities, along canals, and onto the longest day of the year.

ACE Program Day • Niagara Region
Travel the length of the Welland Canal from Port Colborne on Lake Erie to Port Weller on Lake Ontario — seeing the entire system from end to end.
Walk the paved pathway along the modern canal, tracking the progress of a ship through the lock system from Lock 7 to Lock 3.
Discover the river transport system from its earliest days to the present — historic routes, methods, and models at the Welland Canal Museum, Lock 3.
Investigate the engineering principles that allow the lock system to work — raising and lowering ships between the two Great Lakes. Especially relevant for math and science students.
Explore the significance of the Welland Canal for international trade and the broader Canada–USA relationship.
Working in teams, identify the significance of a specific ship currently in the lock system — its origin, cargo, and role in global supply chains.
Share lunch together at a picnic location along the Welland Canal.
Wrap up with a group quiz and a moment for each student to share their key takeaway from the day.
Each ACE program day combines four core elements:
Through site visits, outdoor exploration, and community engagement — not a classroom lecture.
Movement that promotes wellness, active participation, and exploration of natural spaces.
Structured conversations to deepen understanding and build empathy with real-world themes.
Team challenges that build critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
